Beauty:Beast is a Japanese cult label founded in 1990 by fashion designer Takao Yamashita, the name coming from the folktale "The Beauty and the Beast". Yamashita used fashion as a way to be understood by others even saying how clothing was a way he could "talk to girls without words." The label had a crucial presence during the mid 90's with the rise of urban culture in the famous district of Harajuku. Yamashita drew inspiration from punk culture of the United States even mentioning how songs such as Depeche Mode's "Enjoy the Silence" highly resonated with him in his early years and even to this day. His work moves away from the styles of his peers during the time & approaches other topics such as religion, channeled child-like fairytale visuals, & iconography.
This three quarter length tee from now iconic AW 1998 collection titled 'Dark Knight' features embroidered bambi mascot and widely used slogan of the collection "air zone cloned alone".
